Well, we did it.
A full week of Kindergarten - DONE!
It had some ups and downs. The whole novelty of Kindergarten wore off by the middle of the week.
Lo and behold - there are lots of times when you just have to sit down and be quiet. Who knew? Zachariah is not a huge fan of coloring and he doesn't understand why he has to keep "practicing with scissors everyday" when he already knows how to use them. (lol)
We know it will take time for the teacher to establish routines and rules, etc, so we are being patient with that. She is very experienced, so we know he will be in good hands once they are in a learning routine.
Zac lost his favorite Star Wars funtainer (thermos) one day, then he lost a jacket a recess another day. (Someone's mommy has been trailing after him for too long!) It's all about independence and responsibility now. But losing those two things made him very sad. Hopefully it is also teaching him not to lose stuff!
Zac's Star Wars backpack from Target is already falling apart. So, we are on the lookout for a new one. He loves the Pottery Barn Star Wars ones, but it's hard to justify $61 on a backpack and new lunchbox that attaches to it (a request from him because ALL the other kids have that).
Then at recess, he was told that he could not dig for worms. This was a huge let-down for him, as he is in a major "digging for anything" phase. Also for me, hoping he would get it out of his system at school. ;)
I do hear about Richard every day. He spends a lot of time in "the chair." We are not sure what "the chair" is. He told one of Zac's table-mates that he would "punch her lights out." Not a great thing to hear... but at least it wasn't said to Zac. We are praying for Richard, and hoping he has better days soon.
I did ask the teacher at Parent Orientation about her discipline procedure. Like, do the kids move from green to yellow to red? Or do they get 2 warnings then a consequence? Surely she had a procedure, right? Instead, I got the response of "Oh, we just give them choices. We have such a sweet class this year, so I'm not worried." And I was all... mmmmm, okay. Knowing Zac, it won't be an issue at all, since he somehow makes friends with everybody no matter what. So, I guess we won't worry either. I will just enjoy the stories and be glad I'm not teaching. I've seen enough desk throwers to last me a lifetime. (Leigh? Melissa? Nicole? Cori? Can I get an amen?!!)
On the other side, he loves all his new friends. He loves taking a shower every morning and his little morning routine. He loves walking into school all by himself. He loves sharing his jokes at lunchtime. He really loves PE. And he loves when he has something in his folder to give to me. He can't even wait to get to the car, and opens his backpack right when he sees me so that he can hand it to me. It's cute!
He is relishing in the whole idea that he goes to REAL school like a REAL big kid. We are so proud of our little man.
One week down - way too many to go!!

Landsend.com has great backpacks and clip-on lunchboxes. They don't have novelty prints, just solid colors...AND I think they are on sale right now. My older son has been using his for 3 years and so we just bought my Kindergartner the same thing.
You get an "Amen" from me! And what in the world is up with the discipline procedure?!?! Choices? Such a good class? What about this little Richard fella?
I once knew a fabulous 2nd grade teacher in Keller who could teach a little about classroom management...I think she's changed her last name and I hear she's expecting a third child, so she's probably not interested in taking Z's classroom....
Ah yes, the chair thrower! I'll give you an AMEN!! At least Z isn't the type to get in trouble. Are teachers not allowed to give consequences anymore?
Glad you made it through the first week! Now we need a mommy playdate!
I'll give you an amen on the desk throwers! Well for me, chair throwers. I've been catching up on your posts. So fun. You are a great mom Sarah! I'm inspired and impressed.
