I finally got around to getting out the playdoh for SG. She loved it!
And ZZ had a blast going through all his old playdoh toys and tools. He made me "pancakes" and lots of playdoh money. SG just brought me blobs and would happily exclaim, "Look what I made!!"
Oh, the hours we used spend with playdoh - and I see it again in my future.
SG had a minor breakdown when it was time for dinner. We are working in transitions. ;)
Little Man mostly crawled around and ate bubbles, chalk, and grass. Yum. :)

Apple store fun
After A's one year dr appt (21 lbs, 25% weight, 50% height, healthy boy!!), I took the kids to the Apple store because my phone is acting up.
Z and SG were the only kids in the store, so they got the computers all to themselves. SG kept thinking the computer was a touch-screen. It was pretty cute.
What wasn't as cute was the hysteria that ensued when it was time to leave. We had already stayed past naptime and leaving the Dora computer broke her heart. She cried all the way to the car. :(

Fruition
I wish I had the "before" picture on my phone, but let's just say this is a huge improvement. It's not done yet, but we are so excited about the grassy area!
The L-shaped area by the red chairs used to be a brick wall and out-of-control bushes. The grassy area used to be a massive old rotting deck. Under the arbor were more crazy bushes and vines that had grown taller than the arbor, and all over it, and all over the fence. Beyond that, in the area that will soon hold a playground, it was fenced off and full of trash, about a hundred clay pots, bricks, and rocks.
It's been QUITE a project so far!!
Much more to do, but at least the slate is clean. :)

Happy Birthday!!!
Sweet little man had his first birthday!
Some facts about A:
He smiles and laughs all.the.time.
He smiles even when you lay him in bed!
He plays on his own and keeps himself busy
He loves a bottle of cold milk
He is loud when he's tired. Very loud. Not crying, just loud.
He crawls very fast and cruises along furniture.
When we try to get him to stand, he collapses his legs. Not ready/wanting to walk.
He has five teeth.
He loves balls.
He says Mama, Dada, Bubba, Nana (banana), Hi, and waves hello and goodbye. He claps and dances on command. And he smiles a lot!
He eats everything he sees, including gravel, acorns, dirt, and legos.
If he sees a way into a bathroom, you will find him splashing in the toilet.
He loves the slide and swinging.
Nicknames: Asher-Dasher, Ash, Buddy, Monkey, Little Man
I could write about him all day. From day one, he's been the sweetest happiest little guy. So smiley and easy. He loves his brother and sister and they love him. He is the perfect addition to our family. God sure blessed us with this beautiful little surprise. We love you Asher!!

Playgrounds
We seriously go to a playground almost every day. It's just a really fun place that each kid can enjoy. :)
Once a week or so, all the lower grades from Z's school meet at a playground. There are sooo many children playing! It's a kid's dream.
SG mostly plays on the slide. Asher sits in a swing or snacks in the stroller. And Z runs. And runs. And runs. The first grade boys usually have some kind of imaginary game going on... Pirates, army, something. I love the pic below of all the kids running from the woods.
I love that I get to stay home with my kids and provide these moment for them. <3

Backyard progress!
Brian is working so hard on the yard. He woke up really early on this Saturday morning to get the tiller from Home Depot just in time for sunrise.
He got rid of the big hole and is buying sod as I type this. ZZ has loved helping so far, and has been taking a lot of pride in the project as well. It helps that Brian is incredibly patient and willing to work a little bit slower to give Z a chance to work with him.
The other part of the yard will be next. I found the perfect swingset that will go right inside the space. It was hard finding a playset with the right dimensions, but the only one I found certainly has the right price. It will mostly be for the little ones, and I think it will be a huge hit!!
I will be planting flowers all over the yard soon. We are just loving our backyard transformation!!!!

Playing
What would we do without our nearby playgrounds and the super fun friends who meet us there?!?!
I loooove beautiful Texas "winter" weather. :)
(although I will be glad when A stops eating all the gravel!!)

Little Mama
When A is napping, my little helper checks on his video monitor quite often. She will see him sleeping and say, "Awww!"
Melts my heart!

Backyard
Slowly but surely, we are getting the backyard ready for summer.
There used to be a huge deck covering a lot of the yard. Since that area got such great sun, we wanted to grass it and have an area to play for the kiddos. But when Brian took out the deck, there was a strange metal bowl in the ground. It took an afternoon with his dad to get that thing (and the cement left over from the deck) out of the ground. Hard work!
The pic is Brian standing in the bowl.
Now that area is almost ready for sod! I cannot wait! I am going to put the baby pool there this summer. :). After sod, we have a playground to buy, and then the backyard will be ready for summer!!

Kidney testing
We took SG in for a day of kidney testing yesterday. She is such a little trooper!
The saddest part by far was getting in her IV. I knew from our last hospital visit that her veins were difficult. And sure enough, they were very frustrating for the nurses. They told me later to know that her veins are very deep and they roll. I'm not sure what that means, but I know it made my baby girl scream pretty loud. :( I took a pic of our vein-y hands because she definitely doesn't get it from us. Lol
Anyways, the verdict from the testing is that her kidneys look "pristine." That is great news! Reflux kids run the risk of irreversible kidney damage (scarring, etc). And her new dr wanted to get a good baseline, as well as make sure they looked okay after her kidney infection in November.
So, yay!! We go back in 6mo for more testing. Hopefully avoiding anymore infections before then. :)
Going to the Children's Hospital is always full of fun things to do. The cool train tracks, live piano music to dance to, the art room, library, and playgrounds. Plus, SG got a cute new baby doll that came with a paci and a bottle. She loves her new doll. Even if she had to endure some pain for it!

Z's Valentines
Z and I collaborated in his Valentines this year and they turned out pretty cute!
He was so proud of them. That makes me so happy that he is always prepared for special school events with cool things that make him feel awesome. :)

Foosball
We love playing together as a family. So when I saw this foosball table at a garage sale, I knew we'd get good use out of it!
Sure enough, the other day I heard ZZ and SG moving a chair so that they could play together. Even with a 5 year age difference, they find ways to have fun together. Warms my heart. :)

Nature lover
All our kids love to be outside. But so far, Z is our only one who is always searching for something alive. Lightning bugs, beetles, anything that he can put in a jar and keep. Even at the apartments, we'd let him go out the front door and dig for worms. He really enjoys digging for worms. Anything found typically gets named. And the names are very literal (snake-y, bright-o). It's really very funny. Even if we are kinda laughing more at him.
He's pretty sad when we have to say goodbye to a "friend." One time Brian caught a garden snake for him and he was thrilled. His name was Snake-y. And Z promptly made Snake-y a cozy home inside the bug catcher. A little while later, I came upon a sobbing devastated little boy. Apparently let Snake-y play for a while in his cool new home - a home so cool that Z left the top off on purpose. What snake in his right mind would leave? Snake-y. That's who. Broke my baby's heart! (thankfully this all occurred outside)
Anyway, Brian tries to find him things every now and then, while he's outside working. He found this gecko last Saturday. It would not close its mouth. Random. But Z loved him just the same.

Big Sister
We went to the neighborhood PTA Valentines party last week. ZZ immediately hit it off with another first grade boy (typical - he never meets a stranger!) and SG stayed close to me (typical - she is usually very reserved in public).
Anyways, while Z ran around in the bounce houses, basketball, snack table, and cookie decorating station... SG pushed A around and around. A just loves balls, so she made sure he got to hold one the whole time. Every once in a while, a random toddler would take the ball from him, and she'd set off to find a replacement for him.
Bless her little heart, she is the cutest little caregiver. <3

It's a date
ZZ and I got to have a date last week! It was sososo special and fun.
First we went out to lunch at Genghis Grill. His choice, because he wanted to eat with chopsticks. Which he did for the entire meal.
Then we went to Baskin Robbins for a scoop of ice cream. But it was kinda cold out, so we ran back to the car and enjoyed our cones with the heat blasting our toes.
Then we hit the tennis courts for some practice. We got one good volley going, but mostly it was a lot of diving, laughing, and we managed to mysteriously lose one of our tennis balls.
We went home and relaxed for a bit, then met a friend at the playground to play. After that, we went to Cindi's for a yummy breakfast dinner.
Spending time alone with Z is just such a blessing. It's pretty rare! I treasure our conversation. I love asking open-ended questions and hearing 7yo views on life. He's insightful, funny, kind, thoughtful, happy, and sweet.
I look back in my journals to my desperate prayers for my first born. That God would honor the meaning of Z's name: The Lord Remembers.
And He has. He surely has.
He has taken my child's hurts and struggles. His broken family. He has provided for Z the way that only the Holy Spirit can, giving him the most beautiful outlook on life.
Z is the kid who is always writing us love notes, thanking us for what we do for him. Seriously! Just yesterday on the way home from church, there he was in the back seat.. "I just really want to thank you guys for all the things you do for me and buy for me. I just really appreciate it." (I mean - how do you not want to take him to the mall after that?!? Lol)
He wakes up (ahem - earrrllyyy) with the biggest smile. Saturday morning he was trying to cuddle with us in bed (6:30! Sigh.) and he says in the most chipper voice: "So, what do you guys want to chat about?" It's so cute, we can't help but start laughing.
He is our little ray of sunshine sent straight from the Lord above. Always offering to help. Offering to hold A. Offering to distract SG. Offering to help with dinner. Offering to clean the pool. He even "babysits" the two youngest in the playroom while I make dinner.
Getting to give him some super special quality time was definitely more of a treat for me!
I loved my little sweetie pie!!!

Front yard
This is a classic pic of what it looks like when we play out front. And A always has that football. :)
Conference time
Ugh. I picked up a certain 7yo today who promptly burst into tears in the backseat. :(
Apparently he got his desk moved right next to the teacher today. I am in shock.
I reallyreally don't want to be Denial Mom or (worse!) Helicopter Mom. Or Over-reacting-My-Kid-is-Being-Bullied Mom.
But I called the school for a conference today to get the rest of this story because for me, it's completely out of left field. He missed sports class (it's basically recess) today and had to sit in the classroom. He told me he decided not to speak for the rest of the day because he was afraid he would start crying in front of everyone.
Gah!!! I am so sad for him!!! And he is never in trouble at school as far as I've ever known!
But instead of reacting (okay - I did react at first but thankfully the school did not answer and Brian did - and he is always the sane voice of reason), I am thinking about having him write an apology letter to the teacher. Although Brian is against that because we still don't even know what's happened.
I don't know.
The thing that gets me... He is clearly the smartest kid in that class. And we neverever hear anything about that. No compliments, nothing. The reading is way too easy and they get timed tests everyday in math where ZZ is first done every single flippin day. I've let all that slide because I like the classical and strict nature of the school. And I don't want to get into the "he's bored" excuse because I don't think that's acceptable either. But now he's in trouble?
I look back onto the students who's desks I moved when I taught, and they were the bad kids. Is my kid the bad kid??? Why haven't they told me anything that's happening? I'm so confused.

Yellow walls
Our house is quite the fixer-upper. We are kind of at a pause right now with the kitchen due to the cost. So we are going to be painting the upstairs, one kid room at a time.
The entire upstairs is one color. (minus the wallpapered bathrooms) Everything - ceilings, doors, all molding, walls - one color. It's the exact same coat of paint that was put in when the house was built.
And I guess I just would have called it white until we painted the ceiling an actual white....
Now I cannot wait to paint everyone's room. What a gross yellow color they've been living with!

Another reader
It's so fun that we have another kiddo who loves to read! She already loves the library, but it's usually just me and ZZ getting books. She finally got to get her own books from the library yesterday. Her favorite is, "Are you my mother?" We love the ending. <3
Here she is "reading" Ten Apples on Top. She counts all the apples on every page. I was videotaping it this morning - sooo funny because she counts to 13 instead on each page, and she skips over the number 10. Lol!

Seashells in the front yard?
Not sure what these are, but we had fun collecting them today. Probably just little snail shells. :)
It's just really fun to have a front yard and such pretty weather!
Pictures courtesy of ZZ. He was having fun with the photo app on my phone. :)

Private school
I don't know which is worse - that I have no idea what the test answers are... Or that I don't even help ZZ study because he's got that "he doesn't even study and gets a 100%" quality.
(for the record, I have no clue where he gets it - I always had to study!!)

Apples!
One of A's most favorite snacks. He will work on an apple until it's gone!
(ps: have I mentioned how easy it is to blog with an app? all my phone pics are so easy to keep up with!)

Beautiful weather
I SOOOO love this mild weather we are having!!! And that we are within walking distance to 4 different fun playgrounds, a library, a rec center, and a sprayground.
I think A wishes we were within crawling distance. ;)

Thoughts
I got stuck on a show last night where they followed a lady for seven years as she went from 653lbs to 200lbs (with gastric bypass). It was fascinating.
Most people didn't get it. You look at a "fat person" and think, "Well, DUH... Eat less!" They don't understand the reasons it started, the reasons it snowballed. People would look at her "before" picture and not understand what it took to get to her current weight. The PAIN.
It took me a while to figure out why I was so drawn to her. But I began to see so many correlations to pain that I have experienced.
When people hear about women in abusive relationships, they think, "Well, DUH... Leave him!" So many people truly don't understand.
She kept saying, I remember being fat.
I remember too. I remember being in a situation that I couldn't get out of. I knew it was wrong. I knew I deserved better. I smiled, I lied, I continued the pattern. I didn't have the strength, the resources to stop. I needed outside intervention. I needed help. But I was scared of the judgement. Scared of the pain it would bring. The repercussions. The danger. The PAIN. It was easier to stay in dysfunction where I knew what to expect. I knew the rules of dysfunction and followed them well. I wasn't hiding food, I was hiding a bruise... a secret.
After this lady lost the weight, she continued to walk the same way - with a dramatic swing because she used to have so much skin to swing back and forth. She had to learn how to walk normal again.
My mom and I joked that she was deprogramming me. I had to relearn how to live normal. Normal boundaries, normal reactions, normal THOUGHTS. And there was a lot of pain.
I had to turn to my own Physician for pain management. To learn how to live again. My medication was my journal - a true diary between me and the Lord. I needed it on a very regular basis. I still have the journals. They show a journey of His truths, and me actively embracing them. My true happiness and joy came from God. I had accepted His gifts! The Faith in His sovereignty. The Hope in His word. The Trust in His plan.
He loved me no matter what mess I had gotten myself into. He was going to love me through other's judgements and opinions. He was going to love me even when I was in so much pain that dysfunction sounded way easier! He was going to love me through to the other side.
And I got there. I got the "weight" off. Mostly. I had become financially independent. I had a beautiful son. I had an amazing husband with whom I had a very normal relationship (praise be to God on that one!).
For years, I was *almost* normal size. Still had that 15lbs of fear hanging on. True fear. I would have a physical reaction at the sound of his voice. I still cowered under it. And I prayed. Prayed and prayed for release from that!
This lady was losing weight, but the skin was hanging on. She needed her doctor to surgically remove it. One surgery for this kept her in the hospital for two months. It was a long and painful recovery, but necessary. She literally needed to have her body reconstructed after the abuse and healing process had distorted it so severely. Who wants to walk around with all the extra skin when you are trying to get past the past??
One day last summer, during a prayer time, I had a peace wash over me like I had never experienced before. Supernatural. And I realized I had finally accepted The Peace.
It was a night where he was coming over to pick up ZZ. And I kept ZZ inside for a moment. And then I walked outside *alone* (if you know me - this in itself was soooo big!! Brian was in shock!)
And you know what? Know what I said? I walked right out onto my porch and said, "I'm not afraid of you anymore." (still remembering the look in his face...lol!) I went on to respectfully admit my responsibility in the dysfunction, and that I would not be a doormat anymore.
I looked fear in the face and I was okay!! I had finally shed that last 15 lbs. Because my God was with me. My Great Physician had finally finished my reconstruction!!
Last week I actually went to court all by myself!! Tiny butterflies as I walked up to the courthouse. But God swooped in and I chose to take His Peace with me, through that metal detector, and right up to the 325th judicial courtroom. :)
Most people don't know my past. Most wouldn't understand it.
I had a friend confide in me that her husband hit her. You'd never know it. He is a nice guy who comes off totally normal. (they usually do!) He's funny and plays with his kids. But he hits her. She wasn't ready to leave. This was 4 years ago. She's still with him. She might be reading this. If so, know that I am praying for you sweet friend. I've never stopped. And I know you why you are still there. I know. The path out looks too long. Too hard. Too painful. Too scary. Too dangerous. Too unfair for the kids. Too financially impossible.
I know.
And it's not easy. And there are repercussions. I'm 7 years out and still dealing with issues.
But morbidly obese people..... their hearts can't handle the weight. Neither can you. Not alone.
A family member mailed me a letter last month. Out of the blue. She said she was proud of me. She hoped one day I'd have the courage to share my story to help others.
This lady on TV said that people now thought of her as normal looking - especially ones that didn't know she used to be obese. She struggled with that and carried a picture around to show people what she used to look like. She works with her gastric bypass dr counseling morbidly obese people considering surgery. She encourages them, educates them on the long painful road ahead, and serves as a real life example that there is a way out.
If you are in a situation where you would like to hear how God loves you and can empower you, strengthen you, and release you, please let me know. Let someone know.
Not alone.

Great Wolf Lodge
I think I'm confident enough in saying we will DEFINITELY be going again! We are a water-loving fun-loving family and this was a super fabulous getaway for us all. Cannot wait to return!
I think my biggest laugh came when Zach and his friend decided to ride a waterslide right when we first got there. They completely unknowingly got on the scariest slide with a huge drop and a swirly funnel. Brian said later he would have paid a couple hundred to see their little 7-yo faces as they went down. Oh my! Too funny!! They told us that when the ride ended that they both looked at each other and said, " That was awesome!!! Let's never do that again." LOL!!!
Everyone basically walks around the resort in bathing suits or pajamas. Z loved playing magiquest. The littles had their own pool and loved it. I can't wait until SG is older to go to the kid spa. :)
SG spent our time in the room "talking" on the phone. Z got to make his first phone call to the front desk and felt really cool.
